The Majesty of God's Law Part 3

"As some of the Anglo-Saxons were taught Latin so they could read the Bible, they were amazed to find that their own traditional laws were recorded by Moses in the Biblical books of Exodus, Leviticus, Numbers and Deuteronomy. The pagan Anglo-Saxons had never written these laws down but had memorized them." -Skousen

It is interesting that some scholars think that the Anglo-Saxons were part of the lost ten tribes. Thomas Jefferson spend much time studying the Anglo-Saxons and wanted to incorporate as much of their law as possible in our own society. They had many good ideas and I can't wait to learn more about them myself.

"Charles I never realized that a king who has lost the respect and support of the people is nothing" -Skousen

This passage makes me think of our own government today. It seems as time passes our government loses more and more respect from the people. At some point the people stop caring what the government wants and the only way to get them to follow the laws is through force. Its difficult to control people that don't respect the law or the authorities.

On Jamestown and how it was first governed. "Today we would call this scheme "voluntary" communism. However, it did not take long to discover that human nature does not adapt itself to working voluntarily when it is known that all will share equally in the harvest whether they worked or not. Not only is this arrangement an open invitation for the lazy to engage in malingering, but those who actually do the work fell cheated when they see the lazy settlers getting as much as those who performed the labor. Before long this voluntary communism became compulsory communism."

I see this over and over in our society. We have many people that live off the fruits of others labor because they can. If there is no motivation why should someone do anything? Jamestown almost failed a number of times because the work was not getting done. It was not until they changed to private property and free enterprise that they began to succeed and thrive. It is basic human nature to only do work you have to do. I don't have a problem helping the needy and the poor but the help needs to be in a way to get them through their problem and moved on to being successful. If you just keep giving them stuff for free where is the motivation to become successful?
