I finished the chapter on Lycurgus. Most of the chapter described how Spartans live in a communal military camp setting. It was said that the Spartans were the only ones that ware gave repose. The focus of Spartans was the exercise grounds and places of conversation since there was little luxury and little money. They were said to have great independence because their wants were so small. They were not a slave to their job or house or other items we are use to today.
Lycurgus wanted his laws to stay pure so he made the people take an oath to not change any laws until he returned from a journey he was about to take. On his journey he decided not to return so the people would be bound to their oath forever. He starved himself to death. His laws stayed in place for 500 years.
My favorite quote from the reading was "He who knows how to speak, knows also when."
